Valletta is Malta’s capital city, known amongst the Maltese as ‘Il-Belt’, meaning The City. Valletta is a historic walled citadel located in the central part of the island and built by the knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights of Malta or the Knights Hospitaller.
Fort Rinella is considered to be Malta’s liveliest museum where history comes to life. Built by the British between 1878 and 1886 in Kalkara, the Fort overlooks the spectacular Grand Harbour.
An absolute must for when in Malta is a visit to Mdina, also known as the Città Vecchia, Città Notabile. This fortified city is thought to have first been populated by the Phoenicians around 1000BC. Mdina was also occupied by the Romans, feudal lords of the Spanish Crown and the Knights of Saint John.
