For many years Malta has been associated with the finest skills and minds in medicine and to this day Malta continues to be at the forefront of modern medical healthcare. This all started in the early 16th century and the arrival of the Knights Hospitaller, but since these times Malta has continuously grown in skills and knowledge and recently has built a new hospital boasting many modern features and facilities to cater for a wide variety of ailments.
The primary general hospital in Malta is Mater Dei and is located just off the Birkirkara Bypass, telephone number 2545 0000. In Gozo there is the Gozo General Hospital located in Victoria, telephone number 2156 1600. Healthcare services for EU citizens is free, but to ensure trouble free access you should bring your European Health Insurance Card.
There are also a number of private hospitals on the islands. The St James Hospital Group has two hospitals in Malta, one located in Sliema and another in Zabbar, they can be contacted on 2329 1000. St Phillips is a smaller private hospital located in Santa Venera, telephone number 2156 1600.
In addition to this, in many of the villages around Malta there are health centres that will offer various limited medical facilities and a GP service.
